A passionate endeavor to curate sought-after quality wine expressed from the smallest commercial vineyards in CA!
Karine is a passion for making true California Sierra Nevada foothill wines. Our micro sourced vineyards are 100% hand tended and are so small (some less than 0.2 acres!) and personal that they result in truly authentic liquid art that would normally not be made commercially due to size constraints. Who would put so much energy into such little output? Well, we do! Focusing on these micro-sites, we use our all of our enology and viticulture expertise to find these small vineyards (think gardening) and sculpt a wine based on elevation, soil, and variety.
Sierra Foothill vineyards match Prohibition varieties well and make extremely expressive wines in the right hands, which is why we focus on sourcing these varieties primarily. Prohibition grape varieties are varieties that have stood the test of time of durability in winemaking and economics in California. These include Zinfandel, Alicante Bouschet, Barbera, Petite Sirah, Mourvèdre, Malvasia Bianca and Chenin Blanc among others that were brought over by immigrant farmers during the gold rush and were popular during Prohibition.
Our winery studio is located at 3,000 feet elevation on the western bench of the historic logging town of North Fork, the exact center of California. Nicholas and Angeline DeHart craft their interpretation of California's true terroir using the most exclusively grown micro sites.
Nick and Ang started making wine together in 2010, while Nick was working for several premium northern and central California wineries. After a couple vintages of clandestine winemaking, they began securing small vineyard sources that required minimum effort to best express 'true California terroir' in the foothills of the Sierra Nevadas.
"Our vision has gone from bottling one barrel to the best twelve barrels we make (~300 cases) of expressive authentic wines, worth crafting and sharing with a world that is not asking for another mediocre bottle of wine!" - Nick
Nick has a Bachelor of Science in Enology and Organic Chemistry from CSU Fresno and a certificate of study from the Viticulture and Oenology School Changins, in Switzerland. He oversees the technical aspects of technique and chemistry in the cellar, while Angeline and Nick both determine final blends. Angeline designs the labels and showcases her colorful talents with paintings, featured on the post-modern line of Karine wines: Art Series.
All of their expressive critic acclaimed wines are sold directly to a mailing list, while the remainder goes to select local restaurants and specialty wine shops. They invite you to sign up to be the first to access their liquid art, which is a direct expression of California's true terroir with meticulously selected pre-prohibition grape varieties from micro vineyard sites; that is the sole focus of their winemaking endeavor under Karine.

"We aren't trying to duplicate another wine made somewhere else. If we nail our picking dates from balanced vineyards, all we have to add is grapes, which yields balanced wines of ultra authenticity and true California terroir." ~ Nick

"I am interested in wines that complement food and life -- art that I want in my everyday life, yet also reflects a unique character that can come from the entwined qualities of grape variety and terroir. " ~ Angeline Karine
